death for a second: french language
mourir, conjugated in the past tense with the verb etre, -to be,- in irregular form with a set of other verbs which signify movement and which span space: monter, to go up, to climb; aller, to go; rester, to stay, to be left; sortir, to go out, to exit; arriver, to arrive, to happen. these exceptions, lumped and understood in their context together, signify at once movement, and choice or action. but mourir -to die? this is a consolation! death, which is pure absence, pure unharnessable negation, is couched in these words to evade the thought of nothingness. even in this grammar we construct a myth to tranquilize ourselves.
