no flash over the raritan

actually, i'm not sure what i have to say about fireworks, other than that they happen in the sky, and anything bright that happens in the sky turns me six years old with a thoughtless smile on my face. so many things that are so much bigger and louder and more inexplicable than me. it's nice to look into the face of the person next to me and remember that we were both six once. it's celebrations like the 4th of july that help make my case for even the most capitalistic of traditions. standing next to a stranger under a giant purple and gold blast, staring into a cumulus of colored burning pixels, having each had identical experiences at least once, sharing the same regressive shock at the possibility of its size and trail...the experience turns humans into tiny viewers, not citizens, not patriots. the tradition in question is not the proliferation of a capitalist ideology, the tradition is not jingoism or idealism, it's just smallness--tiny humans, stupid happy grins standing next to stupid happy grins. and it's so wonderful that you should almost cry thinking about it.

think:
niagara falls ,
hot air balloons,
panda bear video montage ,
space,
the bottom of the ocean,
many people at once

after two hours of deliberating and waiting for the sun to peek out, me and the boys (two still sleeping) decided to scrap the beach idea. this means there is no excuse for me not to spend most of this dreary day at west end, drinking coffee and studying. i miss it there. it's different in the summer, with more young children and old parents, for some reason. anyway. tons of new words to learn how to use, tons of math tricks to apply. tons of girls with nice shoes, boys with dogs, dogs with nice shoes

to mom:
thanks for the 9:20a "oh, you're not awake yet... great" call !!!
