fun with words

so i'm sitting here, right, studying vocabulary in preparation for the GRE, and finally i embark upon the advanced V's, and i'm psyched, right? so here i am, writing down all these words, memorizing definitions, right, and i come across VIRAGO. you hearda this one? definition says "a loud, domineering woman; a scold or nag," and i'm like "waitaminute," desiring clarity, yaknow? so i zip over to the OED, my old friend, n look up this doozy myself: "virago: 1. Woman," not much help, right? continue on to number two and now it's "A man-like, vigorous, and heroic woman; an amazon,"--get this--"Now rare." so i'm like, okay number three, let's see whatchya got. looking for the definition that's stood the test of time, i find "3. A bold, impudent (or wicked) woman; a termagant, a scold". no shit. termagant, huh? savage, violent, boisterous, quarrelsome...which fuckin is it, english language? indulge me as i try to form a cohesive definition myself:

"virago (n): a dykey broad with a gun that won't shut up," how's that?
